Myanmar

GEOGRAPHY

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is located in Southeast Asia. The country’s geography is diverse and can be roughly divided into four main regions. The Irrawaddy River is the country’s most important waterway, flowing from north to south and playing a central role in transport and agriculture.

WHAT TO SEE

Myanmar is a culturally rich and spiritual country, known for its golden temples, ancient cities, and untouched landscapes. While tourism has declined in recent years due to political instability, many of its landmarks remain remarkable. Bagan is one of Asia’s most breathtaking archaeological sites, home to over 2,000 ancient temples and pagodas spread across a vast plain. Sunrise hot air balloon rides offer unforgettable views. Yangoon, the former capital and largest city, is known for the Shwedagon Pagoda, a massive golden stupa that’s the most sacred Buddhist site in the country. The city also offers colonial-era architecture and bustling markets. Mandalay is the cultural heart of Myanmar, known for the Mandalay Palace, U Bein Bridge (the world’s longest teak bridge), and nearby ancient capitals like Amarapura and Sagaing. Inle lake is a peaceful highland lake famous for stilt-house villages, floating gardens, and the unique leg-rowing fishermen of the Intha people. Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is a gravity-defying golden boulder perched on a cliff edge and a major pilgrimage site.

WHEN TO GO

Myanmar has a tropical monsoon climate with three main seasons. The weather can vary by region, especially between the lowlands and the highlands. The best time to visit Myanmar is between November to February, when the weather is cooler, drier, and most suitable for travel throughout the country.

AIRPORT

Yangoon airport is the busiest and most developed airport in the country. It handles most international flights and is the primary entry point for travelers.
